1913 Buffalo Nickel. Type 1. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ. Lovely rainbow toning on both sides. Something special this way comes: by that, we mean a delightful date run of toned Buffalo Nickels, with this premiere beauty being just a foretaste of what is in store for bidders. The coin is lustrous; satiny surfaces display iridescence throughout, with the overall appearance greatly bolstered by strong luster. Regarding this date, the words FIVE CENTS appear as though on a mound. Their position relative to the protecting rim cause them to wear quite quickly once in circulation. This is therefore the first Type issued in 1913 (see the Type 2 for further description) (PCGS # 3915) .
Estimated Value $150 - 200.

Lot 3852
1916 Buffalo Nickel. Doubled die obverse. NGC graded EF-45. Lightly toned. Popular variety. Though in high demand today, this intriguing doubled die error lay unnoticed for more than forty years its production. The first published report (per David Lange, 2000) appeared in a 1962 edition of The Numismatic Scrapbook. Today, circulated examples number as few as 150 coins. There are several Mint States reported and they are even rarer.

Given the standing of this error nickel in the estimation of 21st century collectors, the attractive Extremely Fine 45 example that we offer should be very desirable to an advanced buffalo nickel collector from many viewpoints. The surfaces are a natural gray color and free from spotting or marks. The doubling on the digits in the date is plain to the naked eye. Other areas of the design show the doubling as well, including the Indian's feathers and lower part of the hair, the braid, the end of the nose, lips and chin, and elsewhere. We unhesitatingly proclaim this attractive coin as one of the foremost buffalo nickel varieties in demand today. Pop 9; 40 finer.

1918-S Buffalo Nickel. PCGS graded MS-64. CAC Approved. Attractive golden toning. This very scarce S-mint issue displays a velvety smooth and lustrous near-gem appearance with a gradation of toning shades on both sides. The contact from the dies is complete (and unbeatable for 1918-S); no hint of weakness on either the head or the pelt where it covers the bison's shoulder. Regarding this date, it seems that most of the mintage of 4.8 million coins entered circulation and remained there for many years. Choice Mint quality examples are rarely offered for sale. 1919-D Buffalo Nickel. ICG graded MS-65. Well struck with nice rainbow toning. The end of the Great War lead to a reduction in coinage production Denver and San Francisco Mints in 1919. Denver struck a little more than 8 million pieces. Extensive circulation then took its toll, which is why the 1919-D is rare in Gem condition. Also, the '19-D is also one of the most difficult dates to find sharply struck. Our offering of this gorgeous Gem should create a stir among bidders who long for an opportunity of such profound importance in this series.

The strike is the best we have seen, a rarely stated observation. All features of the Indian are sharply delineated, and there are no areas of bothersome incompleteness Black Diamond, either. The surfaces glow with luster. They are satiny. The toning, delicate in its iridescence. There are no spots or abrasions to declare. In other words, a beautiful coin in all regards (PCGS # 3942) .

1920-S Buffalo Nickel. PCGS graded MS-64. A better than average strike. Toned. The usual occurrence is for the reverse to be from a more worn die than the obverse on branch mints from the 'twenties. But in this instance, it seems the obverse die was ready for retirement when it struck this otherwise sharp specimen. The luster is granular with stress-lines typical of the worn die, but the important part is that the luster is complete from tops of the hair waves to the open spaces around the Indian's profile. The condition of the surface is even better than average in that is seems free of spotting and flyspecking, that bane of some buffalo nickels. All in all a refreshing coin that should produce active bids from those who realize its importance in the series in this grade. Pop 273; 17 finer, 16 in 65, 1 in 66 (PCGS # 3946) .

1921-S Buffalo Nickel. PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely rainbow toning on both sides. A popular key date. All of this issue's coinage was made in the latter half of the year. It is doubtful that any coins were demanded by banks at the time. They were stored at the Mint until the coining of nickels resumed late in 1923. The production of nickels would be suspended in 1922 at this Western mint, only to be resumed in the latter months of 1923.

Very impressive cartwheel luster radiates serenely on satiny toned surfaces. A no-holds-barred key date in all grades, with Gems increasingly in demand. The present coin among the rarest in the buffalo nickel series. Softness in the relief (possibly from worn dies) is normal here. But bear in mind, the coin is just one of a few Gems certified by the grading service in its twelve years of existence! A coin certain to attract numerous bids. Housed in an old green holder. 1924-S Buffalo Nickel. PCGS graded MS-64. Lovely rainbow toning. Strong obverse; even stronger reverse. Unusual, to say the least! And desirable. The baking fresh luster on satiny surfaces seems to project the lovely toning outwards at the full speed of light. The sharp shoulder, head and tail details on the bison also marks this as a superior coin compared to those normally found in auctions. It goes without saying, the 1.4 million pieces produced in 1924 is one of the key draws to collectors.
